(More customer reviews)My 11 year old watched me pull one weed then grabbed it and had a great time pulling dandelions, yes that's right, he spent more than an hour pulling weeds around the house for fun. It's kind of addicting and very satisfying when you pull the entire tap root, we had some over 12" long (see customer images). The majority of the time 3" or so of the root that comes up, sometimes the dandelions come out first pull, others take a few attempts, often you snap the top off but can get the root on a second attempt. Also it leaves a good sized hole that will need to be filled but it's better than a dandelion if you ask me, shake the dirt off and it's no big deal. It's spring time so the soil here is soft and this tool work wonders, might be a different story late summer when our clay soil is dry and hard.
My neighbors have the 4 claw Fiskars 7870, it works well but the plastic body cracked near one of the claws, which seems to be very common with that model from other reviews. So I bought a Weed Hound since it's steel. That is the only good thing about it because it's worthless on dandelions, just snaps the top off since it's spikes are short, back to the store for the Weed Hound.
Then I saw this Fiskars 7880 at Lowes and my first impression was it looks much sturdier than the 7870 so I bought it. It has 3 claws and there is more steel supporting the claws and moving parts. The "eject" handle is at the base, so after you pull a weed you have to swing it up to your hand to eject the weed, but it's more solid and less plastic than the 7870's ejector that is mid shaft with a longer plastic mechanism. So the eject isn't as ergonomic with this compared to the 7870 but this is simpler and less likely to fail IMO.
Using this is super easy: open the jaws fully with the ejector or pushing the lever down so it is square to the shaft, hold the shaft vertical, center the dandelion inside the claws, jam the shaft down and/or step on the lever so the claws are as deep as they'll go, tilt the shaft toward you so claws pinch in, keep pulling as the lever acts as a fulcrum against the ground, then out comes the weed. Go slow at first to get a feel for it, too fast and you will snap the dandelion off. This takes a few seconds, after a few tries you'll have it figured out
So to sum it up this thing works quite well for me, some might not like the big holes it leaves but I don't see any other way. You don't have to bend over, it's quick and effective, and if you have a kid they just might do it for you
