I received my Big Red Garden Tiller all crated up. It was the next weekend that I was able to uncrate it. Sure nuff, one tire was flat and off the rim. I tried airing it up myself but could not get it to take air. Took it off and took it to a tire repair shop. They got it aired up but it only held for 3 days. Tried again and it only held for 2 days. Tried to contact the 4 service centers in my area but they would not help me as they said Troy-Built would not pay them. Tried to email Troy-Built with no response. Finally I got them on the phone but they said it was past 30 days since I had placed the order and tires were a normal wear item so they would not guaranteed.
Also, the shift knob will not stay on.
I have now had it 2 months and it has never been in the ground. Really disapointing when they have had such a good reputation -- or is it just good hype! I would NOT recommend anything they sell.

Troy-Bilt Bronco 208cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Rear Bolo Tine Tiller Review

Troy-Bilt Bronco 208cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Rear Bolo Tine Tiller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband and I searched everywhere for a small rear tine tiller that I could handle better than the "huge" one we had. After researching and listening to salesmen, we chose this one. (He was very skeptical because he thinks bigger is better.) Anyway, after the garden dried out from the rains, he tried out the new Bronco. He complained to me that he had to push it through the garden. I just thought he was saying that because he wanted a larger one. (Keep in mind, our garden has been worked about 10 years and is now a mixture of lots of clay, and little topsoil, so it is still "thick" and hard.) I finally got to try the tiller out, and on the first pass, through the edge of the garden that had not been tilled as much, it went great. Once I got into the garden that had been worked over the previous years, I had to push the tiller. I also had to lift it up to keep it from getting stuck in the dirt. It would till down, but the tires are not big enough to pull it. Guess where it is now? Back at Lowe's. They were great holding to their guarantee that if it wasn't what we expected, we could return in within a certain time period. Now, we are on for a tiller with larger tires.
Faults for a female user: hard to transport unless you park it right next to where you use it, also have to move the tires to make them either pull when cranked only or move them again so you can push the tiller when it is not cranked, have to push it through a well "seasoned" garden and it is hard to do that, also have to hold up the handle to keep the tines from getting stuck
Pluses: cranks easy, fairly light-weight (but cannot use it one handed like on the commercials)

Mantis 1722-00-02 Tiller Weed Reducers
Average Reviews:

I just received these and I've not used my Mantis in a weedy area yet so I can't comment on how well they work.
But I am pretty unhappy about the false advertising. The description of this item specifically says "Constructed of solid steel for strength and durability." But this is a lie. These parts are constructed of relatively cheap, light weight plastic. I hope they don't need to be strong or durable to survive! It really bothers me when companies make "mistakes" like this that favor themselves and hurt their customers.
They may or may not work, but they are definitely overpriced considering they are small, simple pieces of cheap plastic and Mantis is charging quite a bit for them.

The Mantis weed reducer cuts back the amount of stringy weeds that could wrap around the tine shaft of the transmission. If weeds collect on the tine shaft, this pair of weed reducers make it easier to remove them. They install quickly on the tine shaft of any Mantis tiller/cultivator.

Troy-Bilt TB146 EC 12-Inch 29cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Garden Cultivator/Tiller Review

Troy-Bilt TB146 EC 12-Inch 29cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Garden Cultivator/Tiller
Average Reviews:

We are experienced gardeners with numerous pieces of farm and garden equipment. We purchased the Troy 146 EC cultivator, which includes the "electric start" option, this past weekend from a Big Box Store to finish tilling compost into a few beds. We already own a smaller 4-tine Honda cultivator - that works fine, but wanted a 6-tine to speed up our planting process. The cultivator performed as expected in the "tilling category" however, in the "get it up and running" catergory - it hopelessly failed. I don't like to have to repeatedly pull start any equipment and therefore, purchased the "electric start" attachment for an additional $40 right off the bat. The first 1-3 pull starts were perfect - tiller was up and running and we used it for about 15 minutes per start before turning the engine off. Let me say that the equipment comes with a fairly complicated "start protocol". The engine cannot just be "primed" and ready to go like the Honda. There are 3 positions for the choke/start that one must go through to supposedly get engine to start. However, for us the procedure ONLY WORKED if you had an extra hand on the ACCELERATOR BAR - giving engine even more gas & thus actually engaging the cultivator blades to get engine to start. HIGHLY DANGEROUS and nearly impossible for one person to start. After tiller starts, and I might add - using the electric starter since your arm will really get a work out, it runs fine. If you like the challenge of starting equipment this way, you will be fine. But for me, that's not good enough. I feel this piece of equipment should start as easy as a lawn mower and be safe to start. This product would have gotten a higher rating, perhaps a 3-4 star, but in my opinion, if one cannot start it - especially without having to engage tines, then equipment becomes unnecesary.

Troy-Bilt Super Bronco 16-Inch 208cc 4-Cycle OHV Gas-Powered CRT Garden Tiller Review

Troy-Bilt Super Bronco 16-Inch 208cc 4-Cycle OHV Gas-Powered CRT Garden Tiller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was in the market for a small garden tiller since our garden is only about 20 x 20 feet. I started doing some research on the internet and read many reviews about the Super Bronco. Some reviews lead me to believe that this little tiller was a beast that would drag the unsuspecting gardener down the garden screaming. Others were stunned when the little tiller wouldn't drag itself through half a foot of loose dirt because it didn't have enough traction. Even others were very concerned that the little tiller wasn't very good quality when compared to Troy built tillers of earlier years.
Well, I went ahead and bought one anyway, and may I say, this little tiller is what it is. No, it doesn't buck out of control and take you for a ride, but does it jump a little when it hits a hard rock or stick? Sure it does, just like any other tiller (it ain't a lawn mower). Will it propel itself through a half a foot of well tilled dirt? Nope, not without lifting a little on the handle, just like any other tiller. Is it as high a quality as the Troy Built tiller my dad used on his huge garden from about 1980 to 2000? Nope, but then that tiller was twice as big as the little Bronco. That one would compare to the Troy Built Big Red Garden Tiller that sells for $2599.99, not the roughly 700 bucks you pick up the Super Bronco at Lowes for.
For what it is, this is a nice little tiller. My dad gave his big Troy Built tiller of yester year to my sister and it is still going. He replaced it with a very expensive BCS tiller, and it works great. I tilled his garden last year for him as he is getting rather old (82 this year), and, believe it or not, that $3000 tiller was better than my $700 Bronco tiller. Go figure. But I tilled my garden this last week with the Troy Built Super Bronco, and it did great. Tilling soil is going to be a bit of a workout no matter what tiller you use. It wasn't a whole lot different than using the BCS, just a bit lighter. The BCS tiller will buck when it hits rocks, and it will not pull itself through my dad's mature soil without lifting up a little on the handle. I do wish the handles on the Bronco were a little stouter, and only time will tell if they really need to be. The little Bronco sure is a lot easier to turn around at the end of a row than that BCS or my dad's old Troy Built.
For a large garden, get the Troy Built Big Red or a BCS, but for a small garden, and for the price, the little Bronco is a sweet tiller.

Troy-Bilt GC720R Trimmer Plus Adjustable Garden Cultivator/Tiller Attachment
Average Reviews:

I never thought that a small tiller attachment for a weed trimmer could hold up to my expectations, but I was definitely not disappointed with this unit.
I was amazed at how much I could do with this cultivator. Entire flower beds and even large planters can be worked without the effort of hand-tilling, and the compact size of this attachment allows it to get into corners a full-size tiller couldn't go.
There is plenty of torque to go through pretty compacted soil. Large, solid chunks of clay or stone will get stuck, but a little patience and common sense on the part of the operator will prevent that problem.
Well worth the money, definitely a must-have attachment for the Ryobi trimmer!

Sun Joe TJ601E Tiller Joe 9-Amp Electric Garden Tiller/Cultivator Review

Sun Joe TJ601E Tiller Joe 9-Amp Electric Garden Tiller/Cultivator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I bought this tiller, I went to several brick and mortar stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot to look at electric tillers. I was specifically looking for electric tillers, because I do not want the hassle of working with gasoline. Compared to the tillers in those stores, and even the tillers on Amazon, this tiller has the best bang for your buck.
PROs: 1. Very wide tilling width. I used to have a Ryobi tiller whose tilling width was 1/2 to 2/3 of the tilling width of this tiller. Width does matter! I was able to complete a tilling job over the weekend in much less time with this tiller.
2. High tine clearance means any rocks in the soil do not get stuck as easily. My Ryobi tiller had very low clearance, which meant that every few minutes a rock would get stuck in the tines, and all work would stop. Not so with this tiller. It just spits the rocks out.
3. Electric- may be a pro or con depending on how you look at it.
4. Powerful- this tiller made easy work of tilling through crabgrass. I didn't even have to remove the grass before I started tilling.
CONs:
1. Tilling depth is only 7 inches, which is not all that great, but I knew this when I bought the tiller
Summary: All in all, this is a great tiller for your money! If this thing breaks down some years from now, I would not hesitate to get it all over again!

This tiller attachment works better than the Mathis that I borrowed from my neighbor before I moved! It has plenty of power. I drive it with a 26cc Ryobi Expand it Gas Trimmer. I have a small garden with somewhat rocky ground and the tiller dug right in. I used it on a new piece of land and the tiller chewed up the grass easily. A large rock did stop the unit as it got caught in between the tines. I stopped the unit and cleared the rock, and it started back up without an issues. I recommend this to anyone with a small garden.

This is a great product for tilling between plants and other areas where I can't use my larger mechanical tiller. It pushes into the soil easily and twists back and forth with light to moderate effort. The bar just above the tines is very useful for helping to push them into the ground by stepping on it. I have used the tiller for a few hours in a day and although there is some work involved my arms didn't end up sore nor did I get especially tired from it. I am very satisfied with this tool.

I don't think the factory did much. Assembled it (including supplying my own screws for the two that were supposed to be there for the handle brace) and tried it out in my garden. The soil has been used as a garden for 7 years so it's not at all hard but the metal gear box separated from the plastic motor housing in a minute or two. Either the 'factory' had forgotten the screws that hold it together or they stripped out immediately. First time I've ever had a refurbished item come in such bad condition. I can't recommend this product because of the plastic motor case nor can I recommend Amazon's factory refurbish on it. Returning it and ordering a Mantis. Twice the price but I hope worth it.

Hi- I'm not sure what issues the others have had with this machine, but it's awesome. I've been using the one I bought new for about 3 years now at my home and honestly it's been worked hard and a little abused... but it works as well as brand new. I use it to clear raw land by helping dig out roots, to help grade soil, to make new garden space, etc. My neighbor has seen the results & asked me where I got it. The only negative I can see is the lack of available attachments- I'd like to see an aerator, edger & dethatching attachment for it.

For the small price and power, I didn't have any great expectations. Was I surprized? After years of using a garden weasel to cullivate and weed a medium size garden may back and patiences were dwindling. This product finished that back breaking job in just over a hour. I was actually looking for more places to cultivate. It brought back the fun in gardening. Some areas of my garden were pretty packed, but this guy dug down and loosened everything up in fine fashion. The battery charge lasted about as long a I wanted to work before taking a quick breather. The recharge is quick, getting it back up to full speed in less than 30 minutes. Just make sure you use it with the intended purchase; culivate, aerate, & weed. Beware of large tree roots.
I would say this is a Garden Weasel on steriods.

Mantis 7250-00-02 3-Speed Electric Tiller/Cultivator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good powerful tiller, but if you use it to do any serious gardening, the brushes in the motor will 'burn up' and need replacing. Use for no more than 10 minutes at a time, and let it cool off for at least a half hour (in the shade) before you use it again. I have two that 'burned up' after four months of use. I am hoping I can replace the brushes myself for less than what it would cost to return it under Mantis's one year guarantee (which I suspect they will be retracting in the future).

You'll be ready to garden all year round with the Mantis 7250-00-02 Three-Speed Electric Tiller/Cultivator. With a powerful, environmentally friendly engine, durable tines, and compact profile, the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator is ideal for creating new gardens, tilling in narrow rows and raised beds, or along fences. Whether you're a first-time gardener breaking through new ground or a veteran green thumb, the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator will help you maintain a bountiful garden for years to come.
Powerful but Easy to ControlDon't be fooled by the small, compact design of the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator. Though it weighs a mere 21 pounds and has a width of only nine inches, the Mantis is powerful, thanks to its three-speed electric motor.
A reliable push-button primer will get you started, but the tines won't move until you squeeze the throttle. Once you've activated the throttle, the patented serpentine tines spin at up to 240 RPM to break through sod--even hard clay--tilling down to a depth of 10 inches.
The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator makes it easy to maintain your garden. Simply reverse the tines to shallow-cultivate depths of up to three inches--it's much faster than using hand tools. And because it tills a nine-inch-wide path, this tool is especially useful in tight spaces and hard-to-reach areas. That's a real advantage for raised-bed gardeners.
Convenient, Versatile, and DurableThe Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator features folding handle bars which make it convenient to store in a garage or tool shed.
And with optional attachments (sold separately), the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator can be used beyond the confines of your garden. Its lightweight design and convenient carrying handle make it portable, so adding an accessory such as a border edger or lawn aerator could potentially keep you busy all summer and into the fall.
The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator's durable one-piece cast gear box is designed to last. Additionally, the tines are guaranteed against breakage for the lifetime of the tool.

Earthwise TC70001 11-Inch 8-1/2 Amp Electric Tiller/Cultivator Review

Earthwise TC70001 11-Inch 8-1/2 Amp Electric Tiller/Cultivator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tiller has great amp to price value. For those considering purchase it may help to elaborate on the ad photo. In the photo it may appear the handle is crooked or bent, and thus flimsy or weird design. Actually by design the sturdy handle is symetrically angled for very comfortable grip, comparable to where one's hands would be on a vehicle steering wheel. Handle is great, photo is poor.
Tiller design is simple yet sturdy and convenient. Wheels can be quickly raised or lowered without tools. In normal garden soil the tiller works effortlessly. No problem to grab handle on top of motor and lift tiller onto new raised strawberry bed.
In hard packed red clay sod that has never been planted, the tiller can do the job. But it takes time and work by operator because pulling tiller backward is quickest method in sod.
A fist-sized rock jammed the tines. Because there is no reverse, best solution is stop instantly and don't try to force the stalled motor. Remove the tine bolt and that side's tines. If the bolt is bent and threads mashed, best to replace bolt and nylon locking nut. Actually, before using tiller, best to remove a tine bolt and nut and take to hardware store and buy some extras. Manual says M8 x 40. At Ace, metric bolt was 47 cents and nylon locking nut was 37 cents. The rock bent one tine, but a hammer blow quickly straightened it like new. 13 mm socket with short extension necessary. Keep nearby to remove grass and weeds from tines.
During hours of tilling sod the tiller maintained speed and never made worrisome sounds or smell. Because tillers leave a gap in the middle where the gearbox is, cross tilling or overlapping tilling is normally advised, even in the Earthwise manual. But because the Earthwise is so light you can sway slightly from side to side and till that little strip as you go. The TC70001 is also great for hillside tilling. You can easily lift the lower side as you till and make a terrace.
Cord management takes a little planning so the cord isn't in the tiller's path. When tilling backwards I put the cord over my shoulder.
There are a few minor negatives: The cord retainer edges are sharper than necessary and bite into cord. Probably best to position cord at different length each time used. There is difficulty seeing recessed large and small plug spades to align into extension cord. A wrap of duct tape with black mark at normal position of ground wire helps quickly orient the plug. The 10 page English manual is better than a common instruction sheet. But lacks details for non-mechanics such as "make sure the square shoulder under bolt head fits into the square notch on outside of handle frame." Assembly is easy 15 minute job.
After several days' hard use I can report the tiller does all I hoped it would do. I'm happy and would gladly make the purchase again.

A fairly lightweight unit that has a lot of power. You'll get about 45 mins to an hour of use from a single charge. My wife was able to till her three 4ft x 10ft raised vegetable beds that had been idle over the winter in two charges. It has the balance and feel of using a weed wacker. The Lithium battery is small and compact, hence the average run time. This of course makes the unit lighter.
